The Practice Specialty of Nursing Informatics

Nursing Informatics has been around for the past few decades yet it still evolving and making its footprint in healthcare.  In 1992, it became a recognized specialty by the American Nurses Association (ANA).

Informatics is the study of science and computer science. By integrating the study of healthcare, a further subset called health informatics was created.  Nursing informatics (NI) is a subset of health informatics. Healthcare Informatics is defined as "the integration of health-care sciences, computer science, information science, and cognitive science to assist in the management of healthcare information" (Saba & McCormick, 2015, p. 232).

The ANA identifies NI as a specialty nursing profession integrating computer science, data sharing, and nursing practice (Sweeney, 2017). The usage of NI extends throughout health care making an impact on everyone who uses any technology within the system. It is important because it provides end users improved workflows to provide more efficient patient care. Improved processes for workflows help nurses and providers using the equipment as well as patients accessing their records online from home.

Nurses can become certified within this specialty.  A certification indicates that the nurse committed to excellence and the promotion of quality patient care.  The American Nurses Credentials Center (ANCC) recognizes a competency-based board certification that is valid for 5 years upon successful examination (McCormick et al., 2017).
